Butler County
Organized in 1857.  The county was named after Andrew P. Butler, United States Senator from South Carolina, from 1846 to 1857.  The County Seat is in El Dorado.

Cowley County
Cowley.  Organized in 1870.  Named in honor of Matthew Cowley, First Lieutenant in the Ninth Kansas Cavalry, who died in the service October 7, 1864 at Little Rock, AK.  The County Seat is in Winfield.

Harper County
Organized in 1873.  The county was named after Marion Harper, First Sergeant in the Second Regiment Kansas Cavalry.  He was wounded at Waldron, AK on December 29, 1863 and died the next day.  The County Seat is in Anthony.

Harvey County
Organized in 1872.  The county was named after James M. Harvey, Captain in the Kansas Infantry and Governor of the State from 1869 to 1873.  The County Seat is in Newton.

Kingman County
Organized in 1874.  The county was named after Samuel A. Kingman who was Chief Justice of Kansas at that time.  The County Seat is in Kingman.

McPherson County
Organized, 1870.  The county was named after James B. McPherson, Major-General in the United States Volunteers, killed in battle at Atlanta, GA on July 22, 1864.  The County Seat is in McPherson.

Reno County
Organized in 1872.  The county was named after Jesse L. Reno, Captain United States army and Major-General of Volunteers, who was killed in battle Sept. 14, 1862 at South Mountain, MD.  The County Seat is in Hutchinson.

Rice County
Organized in 1871.  The county was named after Samuel A. Rice, Brigadier-General of United States volunteers who was killed on April 30, 1864 at Jenkins Ferry, AK.  The County Seat is in Lyons.

Sedgwick
Organized in 1870.  The county was named after John Sedgwick, United States army, Major-General of volunteers, killed in battle, May 9, 1864, at Spotsylvania, Va.  The County Seat is in Wichita.

Sumner
Organized in 1873.  The county was named after Charles Sumner, Massachusetts Senator who opposed the extension of slavery into Kansas.  The County Seat is in Wellington.
